Great calligraphy is more than beautiful letters. It's knowing where those letters belong.
In this workshop, Eleanor shares the design principles that turn a blank sheet of paper into a balanced, harmonious composition. You'll learn how to plan a piece before pen touches paper, make confident design decisions, and use spacing, hierarchy, colour, and flourishing with intention.
Whether you're creating a quotation, certificate, wedding piece, or framed artwork, you'll leave with a process you can rely on every time.

Very few teachers have influenced the modern calligraphy world as profoundly as Eleanor Winters. As the author of six influential books — including Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy and Calligraphy for Kids — a former Director of the Calligraphy Workshop in New York City for 25 years, and a Professor of Art at Long Island University from 1990 to 2005, she has inspired countless artists around the world.
Her most recent book, Paris / Auschwitz: Remembering the Children, features calligraphic paintings created in memory of the children of Paris murdered during the Holocaust, with works exhibited at the Anne Frank Center in New York, the Holocaust Memorial Center in Detroit, the Centre d'Art et Culture Juive in Paris, and the Jewish Museum of New Jersey. Her broader body of work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the US, Europe, and Asia, and in 2025 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Brooklyn College (CUNY).
She lives and works between Brooklyn and Paris with her husband, fine artist Leendert van der Pool. Students love Eleanor not only for her exceptional knowledge, but for her generosity, clarity, and ability to make complex ideas feel beautifully achievable.
